Mavericks Wrap-Up Regular Season with Sioux Falls and Winona State

What's on Tap: Minnesota State will face Sioux Falls in a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday in Sioux Falls, S.D. Game times will be 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. The Mavericks will return to Bowyer Field to play Winona State in the final regular season series. Games will be at 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m., on Friday with a single game at 12:00 p.m., on Saturday.

Last Time on the Diamond: Minnesota State split a mid-week doubleheader with Augustana, with Augie winning the first game 5-2 and MSU winning the second game 6-3. The Mavericks then turned around and swept Concordia-St, Paul on the road over the weekend by the scores of 5-4 (10 innings), 5-3, 10-4 and 10-1.

Single Season Record: Senior outfielder Jordan Hart surpassed Patrick Dockendorf (2012) for RBI in a single season. Hart collected RBI number 62 on a single in the first inning for the Concordia-St. Paul series on April 26.

Go-Ahead Home Run: Junior infielderTeddy Petersen knocked in the Mavericks the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning in game one against CSP on his fifth home run of the season.

Regional Rankings: In the first NCAA DII Central Regional Ranking, the Mavericks were in third behind Central Missouri at number one and St. Cloud State at number two. Augustana, Arkansas-Monticello, Missouri Southern, Central Oklahoma and Southern Arkansas wrap up the top eight in the region.

Scouting Sioux Falls: The Cougars currently sit with a 11-34 record and are 12th in the NSIC with a 9-22 mark. Most recently, the USF took one of three against Winona State over the weekend. Sioux Falls won game one 7-4 before dropping the final two 7-6 and 6-4 before. As a team, the Cougars are hitting .225, slugging .326 with 77 extra base hits and have an on-base percentage of .320 through 45 games. As a pitching staff, USF has a 6.07 earned-run average with 301 strikeouts and allowing 127 walks.

Senior infielder Josh Rehwaldt leads the way offensively by batting .333 with five doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 31 RBI in 44 games. Sophomore right-hander Matt Graham (2-3) has made seven starts for the pitching staff and sits with a 4.64 ERA. In 33.0 innings of work, he has 21 strikeouts and 11 walks.

Facing Sioux Falls: MSU leads the all-time series versus the Cougars with an 18-1 record. The last time the two teams faced off was April 12, 2018 when the Mavericks swept the doubleheader by the scores of 3-1 and 6-0.

Scouting Winona State: The Warriors currently sit with a 21-19 record including a 13-14 mark in the NSIC, good for eighth place. Most recently, WSU took two of three against Sioux Falls. The Warriors fell in game one 7-4 before coming back to win the final two 7-6 and 6-4. As a team, the Warriors are hitting .276, slugging .346 with 75 extra base hits and have an on-base percentage of .369 through 40 games. As a pitching staff, WSU has a 5.62 earned-run average with 249 strikeouts and allowing 107 walks.

Sophomore outfielder Sam Kohnle leads the way offensively by batting .355 with 11 doubles and 23 RBI in 40 games. Junior right-hander Dillon Whittacker (4-3) has made eight starts for the pitching staff and sits with a 4.17 ERA. In 54.0 innings of work, he has 47 strikeouts and eight walks.

Facing Winona State: MSU leads the all-time series versus the Warriors with a 71-25-1 record. The last time the two teams faced off was March 27, 2018 where the Mavericks swept the doubleheader by the scores of 7-4 and 15-2.

Up Next: Minnesota State will look towards the NSIC Conference Tournament after the last week of the regular season this week. The conference tournament will run from May 8-11 in St. Cloud Minn., with match-ups and times to be determined.
