Houghton, Mich. --- #6 Minnesota State and Michigan Tech battled to a 1-1 overtime tie in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday at MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Mich.
Following a scoreless first period in which Tech outshot the Mavericks by a 10-7 margin, the two teams fought through another frame without either team able to dent the twine. Minnesota State owned a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal in the middle stanza, but after 40 minutes of action, the score stood knotted at 0-0.
Michigan Tech finally ended the drought when Brian Halonen one-timed a shot from the right dot that beat Dryden McKay at 4:24 of the third period with the Huskies on a power play. The Mavericks continued to grind away, however, and at 19:05, with McKay on the bench for an extra attacker, sophomore center Jake Jaremko, after taking a pass on the backdoor from sophomore winger Dallas Gerads, buried a shot over the shoulder of Matt Jurusik to send the game into overtime. The goal for Jaremko is his fifth of the year and gives the Nowthen, Minn., native four goals and six assists for ten points in the last 11 outings.
Neither team was able to find the net through a five-on-five extra session or a three-on-three period, sending the game to a shootout. Maverick freshman winger Chris Van Os-Shaw ended it when he scored on Jurusik in the fourth round of the shoot-out.
Freshman Dryden McKay, who started for the 13th straight time for the Mavericks, was credited with 24 saves and now stands 17-5-1 for the season. The Mavericks, who were zero-for-three in power play chances, outshot the Huskies by a 44-25 margin in the game.
The Mavericks, who have now gone 9-1-2 in their last 12 games, own a 23-6-2 overall record and stand 18-4-1 in WCHA contests for the year.
Minnesota State and Michigan Tech close out the two-game WCHA series Saturday with as 4:03 p.m. CST face-off scheduled.
