Duluth, Minn.  ---  #1 Minnesota State scored three times in the second period in pulling away to a 4-1 win at #8 Minnesota Duluth Friday night.

The Mavericks held a 13-10 advantage in shots on goal after the first 20 minutes of action, but it wasn't until the second period where the offense began to get rolling. 

Senior captain Marc Michaelis, working a give-and-go with linemate Parker Tuomie, got his seventh goal of the year at the 4:30 mark in giving Minnesota State a 1-0 lead.  Michaelis returned the favor at 9:39 with a nice pass across the slot finding Tuomie at the left dot and his snap shot, which beat Hunter Shepard high on the gloveside with the Mavericks on the power play, made it a 2-0 Maverick lead.  Then, at 14:13, senior center Josh French corralled a rebound off a shot from Ryan Sandelin before cashing in for his first goal of the year to make it Minnesota State 3, Minnesota Duluth 0.

Freshman forward Nathan Smith's power play marker at 3:35 of the third gave the Mavericks a 4-0 lead.  Kobe Roth solved Dryden McKay with the Bulldogs on the power play at 9:30 of the third to close out the scoring in the game. The goal is the first power play goal the Mavericks have given up since Nov. 1.

Michaelis, who finished with a goal and assist, extended his point-scoring streak to seven games with tonight's performance.  For the year he has seven goals and ten assists for 17 points in 13 games. Tuomie, who also had a goal and assist in the win, has extended his point-scoring streak to four games and for the year has 6-7—13 in 12 games.

Sophomore netminder Dryden McKay, who finished with 27 stops, upped his record for the season to 10-1-1 with the win.

The Mavericks, now 11-1-1 overall, outshot the Bulldogs by a 30-28 margin in the game and went two-for-five in power plays. UMD was one-for-three in man-advantage opportunities.

The two teams close out the two-game series Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled for AMSOIL Arena.
