Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

#1 Mavericks Sail Past Seawolves

Mankato, Minn.  ---  #1 Minnesota State got goals from three different players and a shut-out effort from Dryden McKay in skating to a 3-0 win over Alaska Anchorage Saturday night in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Mankato.

Following a scoreless first period in which the Mavericks outshot the Seawolves 11-9, Minnesota State took advantage of a power play to take a 1-0 lead near the end of the second period. Senior captain Marc Michaelis rifled a shot from the right faceoff dot that beat UAA netminder Kris Carlson on the short side at the 19:19 mark. Junior winger Dallas Gerads and senior forward Parker Tuomie drew assists on the paly. The goal by Michaelis is his sixth of the season.

Junior defensemen Connor Mackey made a nice move to find space in the offensive zone before snapping the puck past Carlson for his third goal of the year at 3:38 of the third in giving the Mavericks a two-goal cushion. Junior center Jared Spooner converted a back door pass from junior winger Walker Duehr with 0:19 remaining in the game to finish out the scoring in game in making it 3-0.

Sophomore netminder Dryden McKay, who finished with 20 stops, upped his record for the season to 9-1-1 with the win. The shutout is his third of the season and seventh of his two-year career.

The Mavericks, now 10-1-1 overall and 7-1-0 WCHA for the season, outshot the Seawolves by a 41-20 margin in the game and went two-for-four in power plays. UAA was zero-for-two in man-advantage opportunities.

Michaelis, whose goal tonight is his ninth career game-winning tally, extended his point-scoring streak to six games during which he's racked up 2-7—9. Junior forward Dallas Gerads chipped in with two assists in the win.

Next action for Minnesota State is a nonconference series at Minnesota Duluth Friday and Saturday.

Head coach Mike Hastings commented following the game.
