Madison, Wis. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team dropped a nail biter to #2 Wisconsin by a 3-2 score on Saturday afternoon at LaBahn Arena.
The Mavericks' record dropped to 6-5-2 (2-5-2-2 WCHA) as the six game unbeaten streak was snapped by the Badgers. A great third period by the Mavericks helped them pull within a goal of the Badgers and had a chance to tie the game up, but did not convert in the end.
The Badgers scored first at the 16:20 mark in the first period as junior winger
Daryl Watts chipped a loose puck outside the crease over the shoulder of sophomore netminder
Abigail Levy. This was the lone goal through the first 20 minutes as Levy came up with 13 saves in the first period.
The deficit grew by two goals for the Mavericks as the Badgers scored 27 seconds into the period and at the 6:17 mark. Sophomore forward
Sophie Shirley took a tipped shot that got past Levy and scored right in front of the net for the first goal. Senior winger
Abby Roque scored the second from the right face-off circle to the low left corner of the net.
The Mavericks made the game interesting in the third period by scoring two goals and outshooting the Badgers by a 13-4 margin. The first goal came with a man advantage at the 5:12 mark as junior blueliner
Tristen Truax scored her fourth goal of the season. Truax was found by the right post as junior defensive partner
McKenzie Sederberg made a cross-ice pass for Truax to tap the puck in. The second goal came at the 13:17 mark as senior captain
Emily Antony scored her second goal of the season by grabbing a rebound from junior forward
Mariah Gardner's original shot and beating senior netminder
Kristen Campbell to the left post. Minnesota State had a great chance to tie the game up, going on a power play with 2:04 remaining in regulation and pulling Levy for an extra skater for a six-on-four advantage. A MSU penalty with 35 seconds left hindered the opportunity and the Mavericks ultimately fell 3-2.
Sophomore
Abigail Levy (3-3-1) made 32 saves in the loss with 28 of them coming in the first two periods. The Mavericks were outshot by the Badgers 35-29 in the game. Minnesota State went one-for-three on the power play and killed off all three penalties against Wisconsin.

The Mavericks and Badgers will close out the series tomorrow at 3:07 p.m., in LaBahn Arena.
