Madison, Wis. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team was defeated in the series finale by #2 Wisconsin 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at LaBahn Arena.
The Mavericks' record dropped to 6-6-2 (2-6-2-2 WCHA) as the lone goal scored did not come until the Badgers had already scored their six goals.
The Badgers held a 1-0 advantage after one period of play, scoring at the 16:45 minute mark. Sophomore winger
Sophie Shirley put UW ahead on the power play, scoring on the back side on the net.
Wisconsin scored two more goals in the second period at the 10:15 and 16:06 minutes marks to extend the Maverick deficit to 3-0. Senior forward
Abby Roque scored the first goal on a backhanded shot from inside the right face-off circle and junior winger
Brette Pettet went top shelf on another Badger power play goal.
The Badgers scored three goals in the first six minutes of the third period before the Mavericks scored their lone goal of the game at the 12:55 minute mark. Turnovers deep in the Maverick defensive zone was how UW scored the three goals to extend the lead to 6-0. Roque scored her second goal of the game, while senior forward
Alexis Mauermann and junior forward
Daryl Watts scored the other two goals. Junior forward
Brittyn Fleming scored the Mavericks goal as she went five-hole against senior netminder
Kristen Campbell in the slot. This was Fleming's third goal of the season.
Freshman
Calla Frank (3-3-1) made 22 saves in the loss and allowed five goals before being switched with sophomore
Abigail Levy who made four saves and allowed the last goal. The Mavericks were outshot by the Badgers 32-20 in the game. Minnesota State went zero-for-three on the power play, while Wisconsin converted on two of four chances with the man advantage.
The Mavericks will host Bemidji State on Oct. 22-23 with the puck dropping at 2:07 p.m., both days at Mankato Civic Center.
