Mankato, Minn. --- Mike Hastings, head coach of the Minnesota State men's hockey team, has been named head coach for the 2019 U.S. National Junior Team, it was announced today by USA Hockey.
Originally selected as an assistant coach for the team, USA Hockey tabbed Hastings for the post after David Quinn, who was named head coach of the team in April, was introduced as the head coach of the National Hockey League's New York Rangers last week.
The U.S. National Junior Team will take part in the 2019 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2018 – Jan. 5, 2019, in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.
"I'm honored and appreciative for this opportunity to serve as head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team," said Hastings. "I'm exited to work with the outstanding staff and the depth of talent that continues to grow in our country every year, thanks to the efforts of USA Hockey. The United States World Junior Team's success in the last three years provides a great model for us to follow."
This year will mark the fifth time Hastings has served on the USA Hockey staff on the international stage. An assistant coach on the 2005 U.S. National Junior team, he filled the same role on the 2003 U.S. National Junior Team and twice served as head coach for the U.S. Junior Select Team, helping the team win gold at the 2000 Viking Cup.
Joining Hastings on the 2019 U.S. National Junior Team as assistant coaches will be Scott Sandelin (Minnesota Duluth head coach), David Lassonde (associate head coach at Dartmouth) and Steve Miller (associate head coach at Ohio State).
In six seasons with Minnesota State, Hastings has led the Mavericks to more wins than any other team in the nation behind a 151-72-19 record while also guiding the Mavericks a trio of WCHA regular-season championships, two Western Collegiate Hockey Association post-season tournament titles and four NCAA tournament appearances. He earned the Spencer Penrose Award as the top coach in college hockey in 2015 and is a two-time WCHA Coach of the Year.
