Suess Named Top Ten Finalist for 2017-18 Hobey Baker Award

Mankato, Minn. ---  Minnesota State men's hockey senior captain C.J. Suess has been named a top ten finalist for the 2018 Hobey Baker Award, the Hobey Baker Award committee announced today.

This year's Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Year and a member of the 2017-18 WCHA All-First Team, Suess became the first Maverick to capture the WCHA scoring title after he compiled 36 points on a league-best 19 goals (tied) and 17 assists in 28 conference games this season. The Forest Lake, Minn., native had a league-best plus-19 rating.

Suess leads Minnesota State in points (43) and goals with a career-high 22 markers. He stands as Minnesota State's active career scoring leader with 127 points on 57 goals and 70 assists. His 127 career points stand tied for fifth on the school's career scoring list during the DI-era.

A 2014 National Hockey League draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets (fifth round, 129th overall), Suess currently ranks second in the nation with 509 face-off wins, is tied for 10th in goals (22), tied for 12th in points (43) and stands tied for 18th in plus/minus with a plus-18.

Besides Suess (rhymes with "cease"), other top 10 finalists include: Henrik Borgström (Denver), Ryan Donato (Harvard), Matthew Galajda (Cornell), Adam Gaudette (Northeastern), Dylan McLaughlin (Canisius), Cale Morris (Notre Dame), Colton Point (Colgate), Jimmy Schuldt (St. Cloud State) and Dylan Sikura (Northeastern).

The ten finalists were selected by voting from all 60 NCAA Division I college head coaches and by online fan balloting. The 27-member Hobey Baker Selection Committee and an additional round of fan balloting through the Hobey website at www.hobeybaker.com from March 14-25 will determine this year's Hobey Baker winner which will be announced April 6.

Minnesota State has had one other finalist for the award (goaltender Steve Carroll in the inaugural year of the award in 1981). The committee also used to have a small college recipient and former Maverick goaltender Ken Hilgert was the NCAA DII-III Western recipient in 1988.

Rated sixth in the country by USCHO.com this week, Minnesota State stands 29-9-1 for the year and will find out its postseason destination when the NCAA announces the 16-team play-off bracket Sunday.
