OWATONNA, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team finished its weekend with a 1-1 record as it fell to Winona State 8-1 on Saturday, before defeating Upper Iowa 7-2 on Sunday.
MSU now owns a 2-5 overall record, including a 1-3 NSIC record.
Against Upper Iowa, the Mavericks began the day winning all three of the doubles matches to go up 3-0. The duo of junior
Erin Streeter and sophomore
Monika Ryan defeated Shakhnaza Zhanatova and Anna Okolot in the No. 1 doubles match by the score of 9-8 (7-2), while seniors
Kylie DeWees and
Nina Riesselman bested Lavanya Singh and Lara Peco 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles match. MSU won the third doubles match via a forfeit.
The Mavericks won four of the six singles matches against Upper Iowa to complete the 7-2 win. DeWees won the No. 3 singles match against Singh by the scores of 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-8), while freshman
Camila Ojeda defeated Peco 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) in the No. 4 singles match. Risselman added a 6-1, 6-3 win over Breanna Heichert in the No. 5 singles match. MSU won the No. 6 singles match via a forfeit as well.
In MSU's dual against Winona State, the Warriors won all three of the doubles matches. Streeter and Ryan put forth the best effort in the No. 1 doubles match but they fell to Kaisey Skibba and Justine Daane 8-6.
Minnesota State's lone point in the dual came from Streeter in the No. 1 singles match as she jumped out in front of Skibba 6-2, 1-0 before Skibba was forced to retire. WSU was able to win the other five singles matches in straight sets to secure the 8-1 dual victory.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday as they take on MSU Moorhead in Bismarck, N.D. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
