#8 Mavericks Fall in Overtime to #4 Minnesota Duluth at Desert Hockey Classic

Glendale, Ariz. ---   #8 Minnesota State dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to #4 Minnesota Duluth in Friday action of the Desert Hockey Classic being played at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz., this weekend.

The Bulldogs, who owned a 2-1 lead after the first 20 minutes of action, opened the scoring when Louie Roehl's shot from the point bounced off a stick past Dryden McKay at 5:39.  Justin Richards tallied at 6:33 to make it a 2-0 UMD lead.  Sophomore forward Walker Duehr made a nice cross-ice pass to Dallas Gerads, and the Blaine, Minn., native cashed in with his fifth goal of the year at 8:39 to pull the Mavericks within one at the first intermission.

Minnesota State scored a pair of unanswered goals in the second frame to lead for the first time.  Junior center Marc Michaelis, coming in on the off-wing, absolutely wired one over the left shoulder of Hunter Shepherd. His 12th goal of the year knotted things up at 2-2. 1:20/2nd. Freshman forward Chris Van Os-Shaw, playing in his first game as a collegian, earned his first career assist on the goal. Junior centerman Josh French wristed a shot from the slot off the rush to make it a 3-2 Minnesota State lead. French now has scored five goals in the last six games on the season.

After killing off a five-minute power play from the Mavericks, UMD scored at 13:55 of the third period with a power play of their own.  McKay stopped the initial shot, but Kobe Roth pounced on the rebound to knot the score at 3-3 and that's how the score stood after 60 minutes of action.

The Bulldogs, the defending national champions, claimed victory on a goal from Nick Swaney at 2:17 of overtime.

Minnesota State's goaltender Dryden McKay had 36 saves in the game and now stands 7-4-0 for the season.

With tonight's loss, Minnesota State owns a 14-5-0 (9-3-0 WCHA) record on the season.

Next action for Minnesota State plays again tomorrow (Saturday) and will face the loser of the second game Friday between Arizona State and Clarkson.
