Glendale, Ariz. ---   #8 Minnesota State fell behind early, but came back to earn a 2-2 with #13 Arizona State in the third-place game of the Desert Hockey Classic Saturday.

The two teams battled through a scoreless overtime and neither team was able to score in three shootout attempts before ASU claimed the shootout victory by a 1-0 margin.

The host Sun Devils took an early lead when freshman forward Jordan Sundhu took a pass from sophomore winger Johnny Walker and beat Dryden McKay with a shot on the stickside at 14:42 of the opening period.

The Mavericks took their first lead of the game with goals from a pair of sophomore forwards providing the impetus in the second period.  Walker Duehr took a nice feed from junior defenseman Edwin Hookenson before tapping the puck into the net past ASU netminder Joey Daccord at 11:49 for his fourth goal of the season. Dallas Gerads tallied his sixth goal of the season just before the end of the period, coming in on his off wing and going backhand-forehand prior to depositing the puck into the far side of the net at 19:13.

The two teams battled through to near the end of the third period before the Sun Devils tied the game with 29 seconds left in regulation with an extra attacker goal by Johnny Walker.

Minnesota State's goaltender Dryden McKay had 26 saves in the game and now stands 7-4-1 for the season.   The Mavericks outshot the Sun Devils by a 31-28 margin in the contest and both teams were zero-for-three in power plays.
With tonight's tie, Minnesota State owns a 14-5-1 (9-3-0 WCHA) record on the season.

The Mavericks resume Western Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend, returning to home to square-off with Michigan Tech Friday and Saturday.
