Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State fell to Augustana 17-13 at Taylor Center on Thursday Evening.

With the loss the Mavericks dropped to 5-3 on the season and hold a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference of 3-2. Augustan improves to 8-2 and are 4-0 in the NSIC.

Andrew McFall earned a 17-4 major decision to start Minnesota State off with a bonus-point victory and a 4-0 lead. McFall trailed to start the match and earned a pair of four-point nearfalls to overtake Brandon Carroll of Augustana. McFall is now 7-1 against division II opponents and 13-4 overall. 

George Farmah followed with a controlling 8-3 decision against Brayden Curry. Farmah earned three takedowns in his match and secured a riding-time point to improve his overall record to 5-4 this season.

Augustana narrowed the Maverick lead to 7-6 with two decision victories before Daniel Close took the mat at 157 pounds. Close and Bruce Lemon of Augustana needed tiebreaker periods in overtime to establish a winner. Close earned an escape in the first tiebreaker period and rode out the second to earn a narrow 4-3 decision. 

Following a Viking decision at 165 pounds, Zach Johnston defeated Lukas Poloncic with a 10-4 decision. Johnston earned a takedown in the first twelve seconds of the match and never trailed to Poloncic. With the win Johnston earned his 11th decision victory of the season and now holds an overall record of 15-5.

The Mavericks ultimately fell to Augustana, dropping the final three matches to the Vikings by decisions.

Minnesota State will next face St. Cloud State Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Taylor Center on Senior Day.
