Five Mavericks Garner 2016-17 WCHA Awards

      Mankato, Minn. --- The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced its 2016-17 all-conference teams this afternoon and five Minnesota State individuals have been selected for recognition.

Mavericks earning league honors were sophomore defenseman Daniel Brickley (Sandy, Utah), freshman forward Marc Michaelis (Mannheim, Germany), junior forward C.J. Franklin (Forest Lake, Minn.), junior forward Brad McClure (Stratford, Ont.) and freshman defenseman Ian Scheid (Coon Rapids, Minn.). 

Brickley, who was named All-WCHA First Team, was the top-scoring defenseman in the league this year with seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points in 22 conference games. A two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Week award recipient in 2016-17, Brickley has 8-22--30 on the season which ranks third on Minnesota State's scoring charts. He stands second on the Mavericks at +13, his 68 shots on goal lead Minnesota State defensemen and he ranks second on the team with 70 blocked shots.

Michaelis, who was named All-WCHA First Team and is also a member of the WCHA All-Rookie Team, finished conference play ranking second in the WCHA in points with 13-15-28 in 28 league games.  A two-time WCHA Rookie of the Week award recipient this year, Michaelis leads Minnesota State in scoring with 36 points on 14 goals and 22 assists and has registered the second-highest ever point total by a Maverick freshman for the DI-era. He stands tied for 29th in the country in scoring and is tied for third amongst all freshmen skaters in the nation in scoring. Michaelis has accrued at least one point in 24 of 36 games played in his debut season with the Mavericks.

Named All-WCHA Second Team, C.J. Franklin ranks second on Minnesota State's scoring charts with 12-19--31. He leads the Mavericks with 362 face-off wins (ranks 27th in the country) and seven power play goals and is tied for the team lead with four game-winning tallies. With 35-49--84 in 114 career games, the Forest Lake, Minn., product stands as Minnesota State's active career scoring leader and is tied for 21st on the school's career scoring list (for DI-era).

Named All-WCHA Third Team, Brad McClure leads Minnesota State with 127 shots on goal (18th in the nation), stands tied for the team lead in goals (14) and ranks fourth in points with 14-14--28. 

Freshman defenseman Ian Scheid is a member of this year's WCHA All-Rookie Team. Scheid, who has played every game for Minnesota State in his debut season, has 7-16--23 on the year, which stands tied for third amongst all freshmen blueliners in the nation. Scheid, who leads the Mavericks in plus-minus with a +19 rating, tied for second in WCHA scoring by defensemen scoring this year with 7-12--19 in 28 conference games.

A total of 14 Mavericks were named WCHA All-Academic. To qualify for the WCHA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed one year of eligibility at present institution, prior to the current academic year and have a GPA of at least 3.0 for the previous two semesters or three quarters.

The league is expected to announce its individual award recipients (Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Student-Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year) next Thursday.

Minnesota State (21-11-4 overall) is at Michigan Tech this weekend in the second round of the WCHA play-offs.
