MANKATO, Minn- On Senior Night at Taylor Center
Adam Cooling became just the 11th Minnesota State wrestler in the history of the program to reach 100 career victories as the Mavericks rolled to a 38-6 win over 19th-rated Northern State.
Prior to the start of the dual, Minnesota State seniors
Max Bullock, Adam Cooling,
Brad Maas,
Trevor Schultz, and
Darick Vancura were honored for their contributions to the team. With the victory the Mavericks have improved to 9-4 overall and are 6-1 in conference. The win also kept the Mavericks unbeaten at Taylor Center this season posting a perfect 6-0 record at home.
With the match starting at the 285 pound weight class
Chris Zimmer (Jr., 285 lbs.) was the first Maverick to take the mat in the dual. Zimmer looked comfortable on his feet and scored two takedowns in the third period to win by a 9-7 decision, overcoming an early deficit.
Andrew McFall (R-fr. 125 lbs.) kept Minnesota State rolling when he was able to takedown his opponent and keep control to gain a quick pin at the 2:29 mark of the first period.
Trevor Schultz (Sr., 125 lbs.) was there to collect a forfeit at the 133 pound weight class before
Louie Sanders (R-fr., 141 lbs.) would wrestle at 141. Sanders was efficient, quickly jumping out to an 8-1 lead at the end of the first, and winning by a 17-4 major decision.
Daniel Close (So., 149 lbs.) was active throughout his match against the 11th ranked Tyler Stenberg. Close could not make up the difference after trailing in the first period and dropped a 6-2 decision to the nationally ranked wrestler.
Dylan Herman (Jr., 157 lbs.) was at a 17-7 disadvantage in the third period needing to make and high scoring move. On the aggressive, Herman was able to defend a takedown and turn his opponent for the pin in 6:22.
Zach Johnston (Fr., 165 lbs.) defended a late lead to come away with a 9-8 decision for the Mavericks at 165 and make the Maverick lead 28-3.
Adam Cooling reached a milestone during his 14-3 major decision Thursday night. Cooling registered his 100th victory for the Mavericks and moved into 11th on the all-time wins chart for Minnesota State Wrestling. Cooling was in control on his way to earning the victory, leading by a score of 8-2 going into the third period. There he would score and escape, two takedowns, and add ride time to finish his 14-3 major decision. Rated #3 in the nation, Cooling is now 28-1 on the season.
Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) followed up the historic performance with a pin in 4:18. Abernathy was leading by a score of 9-0 in the second period when he was able to secure the fall. In the last match of the evening,
Matthew Blome (Fr., 197 lbs.) wrestled nationally ranked Joe Gomez. Although Blome contested the fifth ranked wrestler closely the match ended in a 5-0 decision for Gomez.
The Mavericks ontinue NSIC action Saturday when they travel to take on the Augustana Vikings in Sioux Falls, S.D. at 2:00 p.m.
