Mavericks Take Part in Drake Relays and Dominate the Drake Alternative

Des Moines, Iowa --- Trying to build off a record-breaking day, the Minnesota State women's track and field team returned to the track looking for yet another successful afternoon.

At the Drake Relays, the 1600 meter sprint medley team of Mackenzie Beals, Afure Adah, Stacy Smidt, and Haley Kruger took home first place in a time of 4:03.62. The 4x100 meters shuttle hurdle team of Brooke Foreman, Adah, Kellie Wong, and Altoniece Williamsplaced eighth in a time of 62.61.

For the athletes not in Iowa, they travelled north to St. Peter to take part in the Drake Alternate, hosted by Gustavus.

The day got to a fast start with senior Samantha Soupirwinning the 3000-meter steeple chase in a time of 11:31.59. Fellow senior Marina Paulwould also take home first place in the 5000-meter run in a career best time of 18:19.94. Lily Paul would place third (19:27.98). In the 1500-meter run freshman Megan Serratore would set a personal best and place fourth in 4:56.23.

The 100-meter dash finals had three Mavericks. Placing third in a personal best time was Jasmyne Suber (12.60). She was followed by Sophia Simonson in fourth (12.74) an Amelia Kjos in fifth (12.93). The 400-meter dash had Taylor Naatz place third in a time of 1:00.14. Kjos would place second in the 200-meter relay in a career best time of 25.88. Suber would place in fifth (26.62).

Two freshman would lead the Mavericks in the 800-meter run. Placing first was Jessica Boespflugin a time of 2:18.61 and right behind her in second was Bobbi Patrick (2:19.46.).  

The field events were dominated by the Maverick throwers. Leading the charge was Lexi Platz placing first in the javelin throw with a mark of 112'11''. Also placing in first was Morgan Stampley in the hammer throw with a toss of 177'07''. She was followed by Sarah Knutson in third (158'0''). Again placing first was Sarah Kalkhoff in the discus throw with a mark of 123'03''. She was followed by Emma Edelen in fourth (117'07'').

Adding to the already impressive day for the field athlete's senior Kayla Lindell took home first place in the high jump with a leap of 5'5.25''. Coming in second was Brianna Ziolkowski(5'03.25'').

The Mavericks will return to the track on Wednesday as they are set to host the MSU Twilight in Mankato.
