Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla.--- The Minnesota State baseball program wrapped up its annual Spring Trip to Florida with an offensive jolting of 12 runs over the Grand Valley State University Lakers Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Mavericks increased their record to 8-5 on the 2016 season.
The Mavericks got things going in the bottom of the first inning when they produced three runs across the plate with RBI hits from sophomores
Josh Wenzel and
Luke Waldek.
Minnesota State tallied four-more runs in the bottom of the second inning, including a three-run bomb by junior third-baseman
Eric Peterson, to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead.
A wild pitch in the bottom half of the third frame allowed the Mavericks to go up 8-0.
While the Maverick offense was firing on all cylinders, the work on the hill was keeping up pace. Through the first-two innings, starting Maverick pitcher, junior
Mitchell Bauer retired six-straight batters and 11 of his first-12 batters faced through four innings.
Minnesota State added another in the bottom half of the fourth inning on an RBI single from freshman
Jordan Hart to go up 9-0.
GVSU made a push in the top of the fifth with a two-run homerun, but that wasn't enough to get things gaoing as the Mavericks pushed across three-more scores in the bottom half of the inning to go up 12-2.
Junior reliever
Josh Matheson came into clean up the rest of the way in the top of the sixth inning stranding two Laker runners on first and second base.
Matheson shutdown the Lakers in the seventh and pre-determined final inning, closing the game at 12-2 in favor of the Mavericks.
Bauer collected his second win on the year, throwing five and two-thirds innings.
Minnesota State plays next against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on March 15th for a double-header match up. First pitch of game one is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start in Kenosha, Wis.
