#15 Mavericks Drop Final Home Dual to #2 St. Cloud State 30-5

MANKATO, Minn --- In an intense matchup on Saturday, the #15 Minnesota State wrestling team (8-4, 4-2) was defeated by #2 St. Cloud State (14-1, 6-0) by a final score of 30-5. Alphonso Vruno (Sr., 141 lbs.) and #8 Adam Cooling (Jr., 174 lbs.) picked up wins in the contest. 
 
It was senior day at Taylor Center as Malcolm Allen (R-Sr., 285 lbs.), Alphonso Vruno, Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.), Brad Maas (Sr., 165 lbs.) and Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs.) were all honored prior to the match beginning.
 
The dual started at heavyweight, where Malcolm Allen picked up a couple of early takedowns against #1 Austin Goergen, but ultimately fell via fall in 6:57.  After dropping the next two matches, Alphonso Vruno got things going for the Mavericks with a 7-3 decision over Taner Trembley.  This marked Vruno's sixth consecutive win, and stands at 14-5 on the year.
 
Daniel Close (Fr., 149 lbs.) fought hard against #5 Jay Hildreth, but ended up falling short by decision, 9-4.  #2 Matt Mincey was defeated for the first time this season, dropping a 13-7 decision to Larry Bomstad. Mincey is now 18-1 on the season.  After being defeated in the 165-pound matchup, #8 Adam Cooling picked up a huge overtime victory over #4 Clayton Jennissen, 3-1.  Cooling recorded his 20th win, and is now 20-3 on the year.
 
#8 Scott VanDeLoo was defeated for just the third time season, falling to Uthman Rabiu in overtime, in a 3-1 decision. VanDeLoo stands at 16-3 this season. After the Mavericks dropped the final match at 197-pounds, the final score was 30-5 in favor of the Huskies.
 
The Mavericks hit the road for their final two duals of the regular season, where they will face the Northern State Wolves on Thursday, February 11 and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, February 12.  Both duals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
