Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball will have a quick turnaround this week as it will entertain Concordia-St. Paul for a mid-week contest on Tuesday at Taylor Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
Last Week: The Mavericks continued their winning ways this past weekend at home, as they defeated the University of Mary and Minot State at Taylor Center.
Last Friday, MSU defeated U-Mary by the score of 85-64, before beating Minot State the next day by the score of 75-61.
After notching two more wins this past weekend, the Mavericks now push their perfect home record to 10-0 on the year at Taylor Center.
Scouting the Golden Bears: CSP enters the contest with a 13-10 overall record and a 9-8 record in NSIC play. Head coach of the Golden Bears is Paul Fessler, who is in his 16th season at the helm.
The Golden Bears and Mavericks last played earlier this season back on Dec 20, 2014 in St. Paul, Minn. MSU ended up defeating CSP by the score of 64-60. In the game there were six lead changes and five ties and the Mavericks were able to outrebound the Golden Bears, 47-38.
Senior guard
Aubrey Davis led the way for the Mavericks as she posted a game-high 19 points, along with seven assists and four rebounds, while senior forwards
Lexie Ulfers and
Jamie Bresnahan each recorded 13 points in the conference road win.
This season, the Golden Bears are averaging 70.5 points a game, while their opponents are averaging 66.7 points a clip. CSP is shooting 41% from the field and their opponents are shooting just 36% on them, which ranks them third in the NSIC.
The Golden Bears rank third in the conference in assist/turnover ratio with a 1.17 and place second in the NSIC in blocked shots per game with 5.39 a game. Finally, CSP also falls in the top three of the conference in steals per game with 15.48.
Leading the way for the Golden Bears is senior forward Anika Whiting. She averages team-highs of 15.8 points and 7.1 rebounds a game, which ranks her sixth and ninth in the NSIC, respectively.
Some other key players for the Golden Bears are a pair of guards in Ameshia Kearney and Mishayla Jones. Kearney is putting up 12 points, 3.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds a game, while Jones is right behind with 11.1 points, 3.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds a game. The duo falls in the top ten in the conference in assists per game, with Kearney placing in fourth and Jones ranking sixth in the conference. Also Kearney sits in second in the NSIC in assist/turnover ratio with 1.9, as Jones places fifth with 1.7.
Finally, CSP holds the top shot blocker in the NSIC in junior forward Kiondra Nicks. She has racked up 59 total blocks on the year and is leading the NSIC in blocked shots per game with 2.6 a game.
Potent Offense: After averaging 80 points this past weekend against U-Mary and MISU, the Mavericks still stand at third in the NSIC in scoring offense.
Team Rebounding: MSU sits in fourth this week in the NSIC in total rebounds, as the Mavericks are averaging 40.7 boards a game.
Three-Point Shooting: MSU places third in three-point percentage coming into the week, after shooting 37% (19-51) from behind the arc this past weekend. The Mavericks also sit in fourth in the conference in made three's per game with 7.4 a game.
Dropping Dimes: The Mavericks currently rank fourth in the NSIC in assists per game, with 15.45 a game.
Board Game: After pulling in 12 more rebounds to her stat sheet this past weekend, senior forward
Lexie Ulfers currently ranks fifth in the NSIC in rebounds per game with 7.3 a game.
Efficient Shooting: Senior forward
Lexie Ulfers, currently ranks second in the conference in field-goal percentage, shooting 52% (108-204).
From the Charity Stripe: Sophomore guard
Sammie Delzotto is shooting 85% (54-63) from the free-throw line, which ranks her fourth in the NSIC.
From Deep: Senior guards
Aubrey Davis and
Ashley Olson both find themselves in the top-three in the NSIC in three-point field goal percentage this week. Davis currently qualifies for first in the conference, shooting 44% (42-94). In the last four games Davis is shooting 50% (10-20) from behind the arc. Olson falls in third this week in three-point percentage, shooting 39% (47-119). Olson also places fourth in the NSIC in made three-point field goals per game with 2.1, while Davis ranks eighth with 1.9 a game.
Assisting the Way: Senior guard
