#2 Mavericks and #3 Huskies Battle to 1-1 Draw

    Mankato, Minn.  --- Like a couple of heavyweights slugging it out, second-rated Minnesota State and third-rated Michigan Tech battled to a 1-1 draw in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest played in Mankato Friday evening.

The Mavericks took advantage of the game's first power play opportunity at 12:12 of the opening stanza when freshman forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine one-timed a shot from the right face-off dot past Jamie Phillips.  Minnesota State's career power play goals leader for the school's NCAA Division I-era, the goal is Lafontaine's fifth of the season.

Steaming down the right side, Tech's Reid Sturos fired a shot that beat Stephon Williams on the stickside at 11:18 of the second and the two teams headed to the locker rooms at the end of the period with the scored knotted at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score in the third period or in the five-minute overtime session as both Williams and Phillips, who rank amongst the nation's leaders in wins, goals against average and save percentage made several tough saves.

Minnesota State, which converted on one-of-three chances on the power play, outshot the Huskies by a 44-23 margin in the contest.

 Junior netminder Stephon Williams, who made 22  stops, now stands 19-4-3 on the year.

The Mavericks are now 23-6-3 on the season (19-3-2 WCHA) with tonight's tie.  Michigan Tech stands 24-7-2, 19-4-2 WCHA.

The game was played in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,172 – the fifth-largest attendance ever for the Mavericks at Verizon Wireless Center.

The two teams close out the two-game league series Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.

Minnesota State head coach Mike Hastings commented following the game.
