Michael Doan for his second goal of the season at 15:44 and the Mavericks owned a 2-1 edge at the end of the first period of action.
The only goal of the middle frame came at 15:19 after
Dominik Shine fired a shot from the top of the slot that appeared to bounce off a skate before entering the net with Northern Michigan on the power play.
The teams proceeded to battle through a scoreless third period, but the overtime session started with Minnesota State shorthanded when
Dylan Margonari was assessed at five-minute major and ten-minute misconduct for checking from behind. The Mavericks were successful on the penalty kill and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Minnesota State went one-for-six on the power play in the game and outshot Northern Michigan by a 26-22 margin.
Now 14-4-1 overall (12-2-1 WCHA) for the season, the Mavericks are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games.
The Mavericks continue Western Collegiate Hockey Association action next Friday and Saturday with Lake Superior State visiting Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato.
