#3 Minnesota State Skates to 2-2 Tie at Northern Michigan

Box Score               Marquette, Mich. ---   Third-rated Minnesota State led twice in its game at Northern Michigan Saturday, but could not fend off the Wildcats, eventually earning a 2-2 overtime time in the road Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest.

The Mavericks got a power play marker from senior forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine at 7:49 of the first to get things going.  The goal, Lafontaine's fourth of the season, is his 28th career power play tally. NMU responded with a power play goal of its own when a screen shot from the point by Mitch Jones beat Stephon Williams at 7:18.  Minnesota State freshman forward Zeb Knutson buried a shot past Wildcat netminder Michael Doan for his second goal of the season at 15:44 and the Mavericks owned a 2-1 edge at the end of the first period of action.

The only goal of the middle frame came at 15:19 after Dominik Shine fired a shot from the top of the slot that appeared to bounce off a skate before entering the net with Northern Michigan on the power play.

The teams proceeded to battle through a scoreless third period, but the overtime session started with Minnesota State shorthanded when Dylan Margonari was assessed at five-minute major and ten-minute misconduct for checking from behind. The Mavericks were successful on the penalty kill and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Minnesota State went one-for-six on the power play in the game and outshot Northern Michigan by a 26-22 margin.

Now 14-4-1 overall (12-2-1 WCHA) for the season, the Mavericks are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games.

The Mavericks continue Western Collegiate Hockey Association action next Friday and Saturday with Lake Superior State visiting Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato.
