ST. PETER, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team lost a pair of duals Saturday as it fell to Winona State 6-3 and to South Dakota State 9-0.
With the two losses, the Mavericks fall to 2-4 on the season, including a 1-1 NSIC record.
The Mavericks began the day with a 6-3 loss to the Winona State Warriors.
MSU began the dual winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into the singles matches.
The pairing of freshman
Melissa Mashburn and sophomore
Sarah McCann defeated Brianna Havelka and Aimee Basinski 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match, while sophomore
Alexis Haakedahl and senior
Alexis Ronney won the No. 3 doubles match as they defeated Brittney Freund and Katie Scruggs by the score of 8-3.
Mashburn picked up the lone singles victory for the Mavericks as she topped Basinski in the No. 3 singles match by the scores of 6-2, 6-1. Ronney went to a third set in the No. 6 singles match against Freund but ultimately fell by the scores of 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
The Mavericks finished the day with a 9-0 loss to South Dakota State.
MSU put forth a good showing in the doubles matches as sophomore
Kelly Lechowski and junior
Shealyn Bakke fell in the No. 1 doubles match 8-4. McCann and Mashburn fell to Iasmin Rosa and Tacy Haws-Lay 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match, while Haakdahl and Ronney fell in the third doubles match to Florencia Magni and Tiffany Filipovich 8-5.
The Mavericks lost all six of the singles matches in straight sets as SDSU completed its 9-0 win.
The Mavericks begin a three-dual road trip Friday as they take on the University of Mary, at 6 p.m.
