Mavericks Rout Lakers 5-0 in WCHA Road Contest

Box Score Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. ---- The Minnesota State men's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead and never let up en route to a 5-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory at Lake Superior State Friday in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Junior forward Max Gaede started the rout by scoring his second goal of the season on a wrap-around attempt at 2:41 of the opening period. Sophomore Dylan Margonari got the first of his two goals in the game by tapping in a shot from in front of the net at 8:05.

Margonari notched his seventh goal of the season at 3:37 of the second period when he wristed a shot past LSSU senior Kevin Kapalka and the Mavericks headed into the second intermission owning a 3-0 lead.

Senior defenseman Josh Nelson scored his first goal of the year with the Mavericks on the power play at 14:30 of the third period and junior forward Chase Grant closed out the scoring with his seventh goal of the season coming at 15:27.

Senior forward Zach Lehrke contributed a trio of assists in the win, while freshman forward Zach Stepan chipped in with a pair of helpers. Senior Matt Leitner had an assist in extending his point-scoring streak to 11 games.

Minnesota State, which has won six games in a row, stands 20-13-0 and is 18-7-0 in WCHA games with tonight's win.

Freshman netminder Cole Huggins stopped all 14 shots in registering his fourth shut-out of the year. The Mavericks owned a 40-14 advantage in shots in the game.

The game marked MSU's third shut-out in a row – something that's never occurred in the history of Maverick Hockey. The last time MSU has allowed a goal was vs. Bemidji State Feb. 9 when Beaver forward Charlie O'Connor scored a shorthanded goal at the 1:50 mark of the third period in a 3-2 MSU win. MSU enters tomorrow's game not having given up a goal in the last 198 minutes and ten seconds of action.

The Mavericks and the Lakers close out the two-game league series Saturday night with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
