O'Brien becomes 36th member of the MSU 1,000 point club

#12 MSU Powers Past Northern State for Sixth Straight Win

Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. --- The 12th-rated Minnesota State men's basketball team made it six straight wins Friday evening as it defeated the Northern State Wolves 91-80 at Wachs Arena.

With the win, MSU improves to 14-2 on the season, including an 8-1 mark in NSIC play. With the loss, Northern State falls to 11-4 on the season, including a 6-3 record in league action.

The MSU starting five netted 82 of MSU's 91 points of the night, to go along with a pair of double-doubles and a career milestone.

Senior Connor O'Brien scored 15 points, to go along with seven rebounds, to become the 36th member of the MSU 1,000 point club. He is the first Maverick to reach the 1,000 point plateau since Jake Morrow back in the 2007-08 season.

The junior tandem of Assem Marei and Zach Monaghan did plenty of damage on the night as they tallied their 11th and fourth career double-doubles, respectively. Marei  notched a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Monaghan dropped in 20 points and passed out a career-high 12 assists.

Seniors Gage Wooten and Tanner Adler each notched double-digits in scoring as Wooten tallied 14 points, while Adler chipped in with 10.

As a unit, the Mavericks shot 53.4% (31-of-58) from the field and 71.9% (23-of-32) from the line.

Tydan Storrusten led the NSU offense with 20 points, while Seth Bachand tallied 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Mavericks led throughout much of the first half as they powered their way to a 43-35 lead heading into the locker room. As a unit, MSU connected on 16-of-27 (.593) shots from the field and went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Marei led all scorers in the first half with 14 points, while Wooten and Monaghan each netted nine points. Monaghan also passed out a team-high six assists in the first half.

Blanchard paced the NSU offense in the first half with 10 points, while Jared Hannigan added nine points. The Wolves connected on 13-of-31 (.419) shots from the field in the opening session.

The second half saw the Wolves pull to within two points of the Mavericks on three different occasions, but that was as close as they would get as MSU outscored NSU 48-45 in the second half to secure the 91-80 win.

The Mavericks wrap up their road swing Saturday as they take on the MSU Moorhead Dragons. The opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
