Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State University volleyball team will open its 2013 home schedule with the Maverick Invititational as Northern State, Black Hills State and the University of Illinois Springfield all come to town for the two day tournament. The Mavericks begin the tournament against Illinois Springfield, Friday morning with opening serve slated for 11 a.m.
Looking Back: The Mavericks went 3-1 this past weekend at the Western Oregon Invitational in Monmouth, Ore. MSU dropped its first match of the year to No. 17 Western Washington, 3-0 before earning 3-0 wins over Cal State University East Bay and Holy Names. The Mavericks were able to defeat host Western Oregon in the tournament finale by a score of 3-2, improving to 3-1 on the season.
MSU was led offensively by junior outside hitter Jenna McNallan who recorded 35 kills (2.5 per set), while hitting .218. Defensively, it was freshman libero Haley Fogarty leading the Mavericks with 63 digs (5.25 per set).
Scouting the Opponent: MSU will open the tournament against the University of Illinois Springfield at 11:00 a.m. Friday, before turning its attention to Black Hills State with first serve coming at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, before finishing the tournament against conference-foe Northern State Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The University of Illinois Springfield enters the contest with a 2-1 mark, the Prairie Stars won their first two contests of the season against Robert Morris-Springfield and Alderson-Broaddus by scores of 3-0 and 3-2, respectively before falling to Kentucky Wesleyan, 3-2. UIS is under the direction of Noelle Rooke who is in her second season at the helm, after posting a 10-20 record last season. The Prairie Stars are led by freshman Ashley Beaton, who posted 34 kills through the first three games of the season.
Black Hills State will enter the tournament with an overall mark of 2-2 as the Yellow Jackets split at the Nebraska-Kearney Tournament this past weekend as they swept S.D. Mines before falling to William Jewell and Nebraska-Kearney by scores of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively. BHSU was able to end the tournament with a 3-2 win over Newmann. The Yellow Jackets are coached by Sally Nichols who is in her third season at the helm.
Northern State enters the weekend boasting a perfect 4-0 record through the first weekend of competition as it defeated Union University 3-0, Lindenwood 3-0, Arkansas Tech 3-1, and downed Drury 3-0 in the final game of the weekend. Head coach Brent Aldridge is in his third season controlling the NSU volleyball program.
Can You Dig It? Freshman libero Haley Fogarty (Belle Plaine, Minn.) led the Mavericks at the Western Oregon Invitational defensively with 63 digs (5.25 per set). Haley is the younger sister of former standout Chelsea Fogarty who finished her career as a Maverick with over 1,500 kills and 1,000 digs.
Setting the Bar: Sophomore setter Ellie Van De Steeg (Hutchinson, Minn.) returns to the hardwood after earning Second Team All-NSIC honors last season as a freshman. Van De Steeg posted 121 assists this past weekend bringing her career total to 1,355.
