Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State tennis coach
Christie Williams has announced that Melissa Mashburn has signed a national letter of intent to join the MSU tennis team in the fall of 2013.
All signings are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
“I am excited that Melissa will be playing tennis for the Mavericks,” Williams said. “She is an accomplished, talented player with a strong work ethic and passion for the game. In addition to her tennis and athletic skills, she is a proven leader on and off the court and will be a great asset to our program.”
A senior out of Walton High School in Marietta, Ga., Mashburn has lettered for the varsity team since her freshman year. She held the No. 2 singles position this past season, boasting a 9-2 record in the 5AAAAAA Region. She twice received Walton High School’s Raider Pride Award for her exceptional character, kindness and integrity.
A participant of the USTA junior tournament since the age of 10, Mashburn helped her squad reach a milestone of 156 consecutive wins, which now stands as the high school record in any sport in the state of Georgia.
Minnesota State owns a 10-8 record and will participate in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament this weekend beginning Saturday at Life Time Fitness Oakdale (Tennis Village) in Minnetonka, Minn. The Mavericks will take on Northern State in the opening round Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
