St. Peter, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team split its two duals Saturday afternoon as it fell to Gustavus Adolphus 8-1, before defeating Upper Iowa 6-3.
With the split, MSU now owns a 7-7 record on the season, including a 6-2 record in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
The Mavericks began the day with an 8-1 loss to Gustavus Adolphus.
MSU’s lone point against the Golden Gusties came from freshman
Kelly Lechowski, who defeated Mallory Shellum 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 in the No. 2 singles match. Freshman
Sarah McCann fell to Maddie Lindstrom 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the No. 3 singles match, while freshman
Alexis Haakedahl lost to Sidney Dirks 7-6 (7-0), 1-6, 10-1 in the No. 5 singles match.
MSU finished the day with a 6-3 win over the Upper Iowa Peacocks. The Mavericks claimed five of the singles matches and one doubles match to secure the victory.\
Lechowski won the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-4, while Haakedahl and freshman
Monica Sanvik won the fifth and sixth singles matches, respectively, with identical scores of 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore
Shealyn Bakke won the No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-0, while McCann claimed the No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-1.
The pairing of senior
Hailey Robb and Lechowski won the No. 3 doubles match by the score of 8-0.
The Mavericks continue NSIC play Thursday as they take on MSU Moorhead at 12 p.m.
