St. Cloud, Minn. – The nation’s top-ranked team proved to be too much for No. 8 Minnesota State (9-3, 6-1), as the Mavericks dropped their first NSIC dual of the year 29-6.
Junior
David Demo opened the 125-lb bout with a takedown and a three-point nearfall midway through the first period over No. 3 Eric Forde. Demo added a late escape in the third period for a 6-0 win.
After MSU dropped back-to-back decisions at 133-lbs and 141-lbs, freshman
Thomas Allen dropped a hard-fought battle to Jacob Horn, making it three in a row for the Huskies to take a 9-3 lead. SCSU’s Clint Poster would give the Huskies a 14-3 lead after recording a 16-0 tech fall over
Sawyer Hoffman.
No. 7
Cody Quinn ended the streak with a 4-2 decision over Gabe Fogarty, cutting the SCSU lead to 14-6. This would be as close at MSU would get, as SCSU won the final four matches, including a pin at heavyweight, to record the 29-6 win.
With the win, St. Cloud State claimed the NSIC regular season championship.
MSU will return home tomorrow night as it hosts Northern State in the regular season finale. Action is slated for 7 p.m. at Taylor Center.
