#23 Minnesota State Runs Past Buena Vista

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- The No. 23 Minnesota State women's basketball team posted the second-most points in a game in program history as it earned a 119-57 win over Buena Vista.

MSU's 62-point victory as represents the largest margin of victory in program history, surpassing the previous mark of 61 points set in the 2008-09 season where the Mavericks defeated William Penn 101-40.

The Mavericks netted the first bucket of the contest, by way of a senior Karlee Gengenbacher (Quincy, Ill.) bucket, before the Beavers would answer with back-to-back buckets, giving BVU a 4-3 lead with 18:03 remaining in the first half.

After that, it would be all MSU as it went on a 30-2 run, opening up a 33-6 lead with 9:49 to play in the opening stanza.
The Mavericks would take a 56-24 lead into intermission, behind a solid defensive effort, forcing 15 Beaver turnovers, while recording six steals. MSU connected on 21-of-36 (58%) of its shots from the field and 6-of-15 (40%) from behind the arc in the first half, while holding BVU to 8-of-30 (27%) from the field and 1-of-7 (14%) from downtown.

Junior Ashley Olson (Blue Earth, Minn.) paced the Mavericks with nine points in the opening stanza. Four different Mavericks each netted eight points, while 10 different athletes found their way into the scoring column in the opening 20 minutes.

The Maverick offense continued to click in the second half, as MSU outscored BVU 63-33 in the final 20 minutes behind a 22-of-40 (55%) shooting performance from the field, while going 7-of-12 (58%) from behind the arc.

Freshman Britney Scherber (Bloomington, Minn.) paced the Mavericks in the second half, netting 12 points, while senior Ali Wilkinson (Blue Mounds, Wis.) was able to contribute 10 points of her own.

There were seven Mavericks to reach double-figures, led by Scherber who finished the game with 20 points. Wilkinson tallied 18 points, while Olson and senior Alli Hoefer (Plymouth, Minn.) each added 14, freshman Tyra Johnson (Apple Valley, Minn.) contributed 11 points while sophomore Anna Leloux (Parker, S.D.) rounded out the top-scorers with 10 points of her own.
Collectively, MSU forced 34 BVU turnovers while committing 10 of its own. The Mavericks ended one assist shy of the NSIC single-game assist record, finishing the contest with 33 dimes.

The Mavericks connected on 43-of-76 (57%) of their shots from the floor, 13-of-27 (48%) of their shots from behind the arc, but only connected on 20-of-28 (71%) of their shots from the charity stripe.

Minnesota State will return to action as it travels to Denver, Colo. to compete in the Metro State Thanksgiving Classic. The Mavericks will open the tournament against Metro State, Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.
