Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State took on visiting Lethbridge (Alta.) in exhibition men's hockey action Sunday in Mankato.
The host Mavericks scored first and never looked back in downing the Pronghorns by a 7-1 margin.
Sophomore forward
Dylan Margonari got things going at the 5:20 mark of the first period when he scored on a partial breakaway when he skated into the offensive zone and lifted a shot over Alex Sirard's shoulder, stick side to give the Mavericks the `1-0 lead. The visitng Pronghorns responded with 9:40 remaining in the period, scoring on the power play with
Brent Henke scored on a tipping a shot past MSU's
Stephon Williams to tie the game at one apiece. The Mavericks answered back two minutes later when junior forward
Matt Leitner fired a shot from the top of the right circle past the glove of Sirard to make it 2-1. Sophomore forward
Teddy Blueger scored the Mavericks third goal on a power play with 2:55 remaining in the period. The Pronghorns goalie could not control a rebound after a shot from
Mat Knoll and Blueger was at the front of the net to poke the puck in giving MSU a 3-1 lead.
Freshman forward
Zach Stepan gave the Mavericks a 4-1 lead 6:09 into the second period, scoring on a slap shot from the top of the right circle. Freshman forward
Michael Huntebrinker scored MSU's fifth goal of the game at 15:24 on a rebound attempt.
Senior forward
Johnny McInnis scored 1:01 into the third period, connecting on a rebound from his own shot in making it 6-1. Sophomore Defensemen
Nick Buchanan made it 7-1 at 15:50 mark of the third period scoring on a wrist shot from the top of the circle.
MSU used all three of its goaltenders in the game with Williams, senior
Evan Karambelas and freshman
Cole Huggins combining to make 10 stops. The Mavericks owned a 52-11 shot advantage in the game.
In addition to his goal, sophomore forward Teddy Blueger drew assists on goals by Margonari, McInnis and Buchanan.
Minnesota State returns to action next weekend when they travel to Providence (R.I.) to take on Providence College in a two-game nonconference series to officially kickoff the regular season. Friday and Saturday's game are both scheduled for 7 p.m. (EST), starts.
