Â
The Mavericks drop to 1-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in WCHA play, while Wisconsin improves to 2-0-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in league competition.
Â
Although scoreless, the first period was fast-paced from the start to finish. Senior goaltender
Danielle Butters (London, Ontario) appeared on point from the get-go for MSU making 14 saves in the period.
Â
The Mavericks received two power-plays of their own in the second period and nearly converted on the second, but junior
Kathleen Rogan (Vancouver, B.C.) was denied by UW senior
Alex Rigsby, who made a blocker save and collected the rebound with her back on the crease. Less than a minute later at the 11:35 mark, Badger junior
Brittany Ammerman picked up a loose puck at neutral ice and streaked into the Maverick zone, short-handed, before lifting a nifty back-handed shot just under the crossbar giving UW a 1-0 lead. The Badgers stretched the lead to two at the 18:21 mark when senior
Madison Packer used a wrap-around shot to slip the puck through the five-hole of Butters on the power-play.
Â
Junior
Elisabeth Hewett (Oak Bluff, Man,) brought the Mavericks within one at the 2:58 mark of the third period when she blasted a slap shot from inside blue line that beat Rigsby on the left side for her first career goal. Senior
Lauren Barnes (Burnsville, Minn.) and freshman
Anna Fiegert (Landshut, Germany) earned assists on the play as it was the first point of Fiegert's career. However, Wisconsin would respond with three goals of its own in the period as freshman
Sarah Nurse scored at 7:08, before Ammerman collected her second of the contest at 8:27, and junior
Blayre Turnbull netted the second Badger short-handed goal of the day at 13:31 to complete the 5-1 final.
Â
Butters finished with a game-high 32 saves for the Mavericks whom were zero-of-five on the power-play, while Rigsby totaled 28 for UW who finished one-of-three on the man advantage. The Badgers outshot MSU 37-29 on the afternoon.
