Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The No. 13 Minnesota State volleyball team split with Northern State and St. Cloud State by scores of 1-3 and 3-1 respectively in the first day of the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Fall Classic.
The Mavericks fell to the Wolves in the first set by a score of 17-25, rallied in the second set of the day winning by a score of 25-22 but couldn’t hold off the Northern State in the third and fourth sets as they fell by scores of 24-26 and 19-25 respectively.
Minnesota State was led by the senior tandem of
Jill Storlie and
Chelsea Fogarty who recorded 12 kills and 11 kills respectively. The Mavericks struggled to get anything going offensively as they hit just .097 as a team. Storlie also led Minnesota State in blocks with five.
The Mavericks returned to the court for their second match of the day as they squared off against the St. Cloud State Huskies, Minnesota State was able to come away with the 3-1 win as they won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-8, but fell in the third set 22-25 and retaliated in the fourth set defeating the Huskies 25-23 to come away with the 3-1 win an improve to 5-1 on the season.
Minnesota State was led by Fogarty and senior
Courteney Steinhauser in the second match of the day who recorded 15 and 10 kills respectively, Steinhauser finished the game with a team high six blocks. Storlie was able to record eight kills and five blocks in the winning effort.
The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow at 12 noon as they face host, No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney.
