What's on Tap: Minnesota State (1-1-0, 0-0-0) opens its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference slate at home as it hosts Concordia-St. Paul (0-2-0, 0-0-0) Thursday at 4 p.m. The Mavericks wrap-up the homestand Sunday at 12 p.m. when #2 Grand Valley State (2-0-0) comes to Mankato.
Summing Up the Show-Me State: MSU finished 1-1 after a Missouri road trip where it faced the top-two teams in the MIAA last season. The Mavericks defeated Truman State 2-1 on Friday behind a goal from junior Tori Meinhardt and the game-winner off the foot of senior Brianne West.
Minnesota State fell to the University of Central Missouri on Sunday as the Jennies scored with less than three minutes on the clock to win 2-1. Freshman Korey Kronforst scored the lone goal for the Mavericks.
Scouting the Golden Bears: Concordia-St. Paul (0-2-0) takes on the Mavericks after losing to Maryville 2-3 OT and Southwest Baptist 0-2 in the first weekend of action. The Golden Bears are averaging and allowing an equal 13.5 shots/game. Concordia boasts a total of 10 upperclassmen on its 24 student-athlete roster.
Senior forward Amanda Olsen has scored both Golden Bears' goals this season. She also leads the team in shots with eight.followed by fellow senior forward Arielle Stimson with seven. Junior goalkeeper Kayla Kuczaboski has started one game allowing three goals, while making one save. Freshman goalkeeper Emma Gartner made four saves and allowed two goals in her lone start.
Inside the MSU/CU Series: Minnesota State has never lost to Concordia-St. Paul boasting an 8-0 all-time record. The Mavericks have outscored the Golden Bears 37-2 in a series dating back to 2002. Last season, senior Brittany Henry scored the game-winning goal as MSU won 1-0.
About Grand Valley State: The Lakers (2-0-0) come to Mankato ranked #2 in the country. The defeated Armstrong Atlantic, 3-1, and Indianapolis, 4-1, at the Grand Valley State Kickoff Tournament last weekend. GVSU lost in the national championship game last season and have out shot opponents 22-4 this year.
Senior forward Maria Brown leads GVSU with five points after recording two-goals and an assist in the opening weekend. Five other Lakers have scored a goal each. Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Parise has four saves and owns a 0.67 GAA. Grand Valley State holds plenty of experience with 15 of 24 upperclassmen on its roster.
MSU/GVSU History: The Mavericks hold a 0-1-1 mark against the Lakers in two games since 2010. The two teams tied last season 1-1 with senior midfielder Brianne West scoring for MSU.
Shots Galore: Minnesota State out shot its opponents 28-16 in the opening weekend with five Mavericks firing four or more shots.
Starting the Right Way: Freshman forward Korey Kronforst, a Cary, Ill. native, scored her first collegiate goal Sunday against the University of Central Missouri. Kronforst took a pass from senior Brittany Henry as slid it past the left post tying the game a one-goal each.
Coach 'Em Up: With the 2-1 season-opening win over Truman State, Minnesota State is now a perfect 5-0 in season openers under Head Coach Peter McGahey.
