What Happened & What’s Ahead: The Minnesota State volleyball team (10-3, 4-1 NSIC) wrapped up a five match homestand as they defeated No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul 3-2, Northern State 3-2 and No. 19 MSU-Moorhead 3-1. They take to the road to face conference foes St. Cloud State (6-7, 1-4 NSIC) and Minnesota-Duluth (13-1, 4-1 NSIC) The Mavericks are 41-48-1 all-time against the Huskies and 19-39-3 against the Bulldogs.
Third Times a Charm: The Mavericks have faced the No. 2 ranked team in the country three weeks in a row, Minnesota State lost to then ranked No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney 1-3, fell to No. 2 Southwest Minn. State 0-3 a week later but on Tuesday, Sept. 19 the Mavericks defeated the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears 3-2. The win marks the first time that Minnesota State has defeated Concordia-St. Paul since 2002.
Give Me a ‘Five’: Minnesota State is 3-0 in matches that go five sets, the Mavericks defeated Sioux Falls 3-2 on Sept. 14. In that match, Minnesota State was down 0-2 before rallying after intermission and earning the 3-2 win. Four days later the Mavericks played host to No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Golden Bears would not go down without a fight as they took the third and fourth sets but the Mavericks were able to win the fifth set and come away with the 3-2 win. In their win over Northern State, the Mavericks once again came away with a 3-2 win last Friday at the Taylor Center.
Block Party: The Mavericks are led in blocks by the senior duo of Jill Storlie and Courteney Steinhauser who have recorded 68 blocks and 57 blocks respectively. As a team Minnesota State has recorded 135 blocks (2.6 per sets) compared to 81 (1.56 per sets) by its opponents.
Career Wins: Head Coach Dennis Amundson is the seventh head coach in the history of the Minnesota State University volleyball program and has amassed a 144-76 record, and is now tied with Georgene Brock (1968-79) for the all-time winningist coach in Minnesota State history. Brock had a career record of 144-108-6.
One For the Record Books: Senior outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty became the fourth player in Minnesota State University Mankato history to post 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs, Fogarty has 1,346 career kills and 1,003 career digs. Fogarty joins Nichole Rose (2000-’03) who had 1,280 kills and 1,036 digs, Ashley Nachreiner (2005-’08) who finished her career with 1,379 kills and 1,036 digs and Jen Jacobs (2000-’03) who holds Minnesota State’s all-time kill record with 1,555 kills and all-time digs with 1,623.
