Auburndale, Fla. --- #15 Minnesota State fell behind early, but rallied with 11 runs in the final three innings in claiming an 11-4 nonconference win over St. Joseph's Sunday in Florida.
Trailing 4-0 after five and half innings of play, a two-run double from senior Matt Odegaard and a RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore Nolan Johnson got things going as the Mavericks mounted its comeback in the bottom of the sixth against the Pumas.
MSU took the lead on the heels of a five-run seventh inning. Junior Lucas Skjefte smacked an RBI triple and scored on sophomore Cory Glieden's RBI sac fly to center. Then, after Pat Dockendorf singled and a pair of walks to Odegaard and Scott Lindner, Johnson's three-run triple put the Mavericks up by a 8-4 margin.
Skjefte, who was three-for-four in the win, hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring. The homer is the first of the year for Skjefte and the third of his career. Johnson finished with a three-for-three, four-RBI performance.
Senior Ben Kincaid started and was charged with two earned runs while striking out six and giving up seven hits in six innings of work. Sophomore Jason Hoppe, who did not allow a run while tossing the final three innings, got the win while scattering four hits with three strike outs. He stands 1-0 for the year and the victory gives the Mavericks a 7-2 overall record.
Minnesota State plays another nine-inning nonconference game Tuesday in Auburndale, Fla., with a 3:00 p.m. start time scheduled with Seton Hill.
