No. 22 Minnesota State Falls to No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State in Four Sets

Box Score Marshall, Minn. – The No. 22 Mavericks took to the court for the final weekend of the regular season as they faced No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota State fell in the match 3-1. The Mavericks dropped the first set 25-21, rallied in the second set earning the 26-24 win, but had its efforts come up short in the final two sets 25-15 and 25-17, falling to 17-10 on the season and 11-8 in the NSIC.

Minnesota State led by as many as eight, as it took an 11-3 lead in the first set behind the tandem of senior middle blockers Jill Storlie and  Courteney Steinhauser who tallied five blocks and four blocks respectively. Despite the early lead, the Mavericks fell in the set by a score of 25-21.

The Mavericks started the second set in a 12-6 hole before rallying to a 21-21 tie. The Mustangs and Mavericks then exchanged points, coming to a 24-24 draw when freshman outside hitter Rachel Ott recorded a service ace giving MSU a 25-24 lead. The Mavericks scored set point with a Kayla Berning block, earning the 26-24 win, bringing the match to 1-1.

The Mustangs came out with a vengeance after intermission, taking an 11-2 lead over the Mavericks in the third set. Minnesota State was unable to get its offense going in the set, as they fell by a score of 25-15, dropping to 2-1 in the match.

Minnesota State was unable to overcome the 2-1 deficit as it dropped the third set by a score of 25-17 falling to Southwest Minnesota State 3-1 in the match. The Mavericks trailed 11-9 at one point in the set before the Mustangs went on a 14-8 running, giving the Mavericks their 10th loss of the season.

The Mavericks were led by senior outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty who recorded a team-high 15 kills, Steinhauser finished the match with 13 kills and five blocks and Storlie added nine kills and eight blocks.

The Mavericks will compete in their final regular season match of the 2012 campaign tomorrow as they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to face the University of Sioux Falls at 3 p.m.
