Looking Back: The Minnesota State volleyball team (11-4, 5-2 NSIC) split this past weekend as they traveled to St. Cloud, Minn. and Duluth, Minn.. The Mavericks defeated the Huskies on Friday evening by a score of 3-1, but fell to the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon, 0-3, for their second conference loss of the season. Chelsea Fogarty led Minnesota State in kills, she recorded 19 kills on the weekend.
About the Opposition: No. 18 Wayne State comes into the match-up with an overall record of 13-3 and are 6-1 in the NSIC. The Wildcats are on a seven game win-streak and last weekend swept the University of Mary and Minot State in Wayne, Neb. Augustana is currently 11-5 overall and have amassed a 5-2 conference record. The Vikings also went 2-0 this past weekend as they didn’t allow University of Mary or Minot State to win a set.
A Look Into the Series: The Mavericks hold a 12-7 all-time advantage over the Wildcats, but have recorded a mark of 2-5 in the past four seasons. Last season, Minnesota State went 1-1 against Wayne State. The Mavericks are 26-30 all-time against the Vikings with a mark of 5-1 since 2008. The last time that Augustana has defeated Minnesota State was Sept. 16, 2008 in Sioux Falls, S.D. by a score of 0-3.
In It to Win It: Head Coach Dennis Amundson is the seventh head coach in the history of the Minnesota State University volleyball program and with the Mavericks 3-1 win over St. Cloud State this past Friday Amundson improved 145-76 in his career, surpassing Georgene Brock (144-108-6) for the most wins in Minnesota State University volleyball history.
Earning the Kill: The Minnesota State volleyball team has lost four matches this season and in those four matches the Mavericks failed to record over 45 kills as a team. Minnesota State is 11-0 when they record at least 46 kills in a match.
First Timer’: In the Sept. 29 match-up against No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth the Mavericks did not have one athlete record double digit kills, this was the first time during the 2012 campaign that Minnesota State did not have an athlete notch double digit kills.
Bump, Set, Stein: Senior outside hitter Courteney Steinhauser is second on the team in kills with 159, second on the team in total blocks with 68 and currently leads the Mavericks in solo blocks with 14 and with her .328 hitting percentage.
