Dorr's Three Points Power Mavericks Past Beavers

1/28/2012 9:52:00 PM

Bemidji, Minn.  ---  Minnesota State got a pair of goals and an assist from senior forward Michael Dorr in downing Bemidji State, 5-2, in a men’s Western Collegiate HockeyAssociation contest Saturday .

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the opening frame, but there was plenty of offense in the second stanza with five goals scored.

Junior Eriah Hayes, the reigning WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, got his fourth goal in the last three games when he finished off a pair of nice backhanded saucer passes from freshman linemates Matt Leitner and Jean-Paul Lafontaine to beat Andrew Walsh with a one-timer low on the stickside at 1:50.  Following a shorthanded tally by BSU’s David Boehm at 8:55, senior captain Michael Dorr beat Walsh after taking a backdoor pass from Adam Mueller at 10:14.  It became a 3-1 MSU lead at the 15-minute mark when Johnny McInnis made a nice move to get around a Beaver defender and fed sophomore Zach Lehrke for the easy tap in. BSU cut the lead to one at 16:21 on Radoslav Illo’s rebound tally.

Dorr got his second goal of the game at 17:36 of the third period after taking a pass from Lehrke and senior forward Mike Louwerse closed out the scoring at 19:51 with an empty net power play goal.

MSU netminder Phil Cook continued his stellar play by turning aside 29 BSU shots. Dorr, who hadn’t scored an even-strength goal since Nov. 5th (he last three goals were shorthanded goals), also assisted on Lehrke’s goal for a three-point night.  Lehrke also had a goal and an assist in the game, as did Mike Louwerse.

BSU held a 31-25 advantage in shots on goal in the game.  MSU held Bemidji State scoreless in one power play chance on the night, while the Mavericks were unsuccessful in their three power play opportunities.

Now 9-18-1 overall and 4-14-1 WCHAon the year, the Mavericks have gone 6-6-0 in its last 12 games.  MSU continues WCHA action next weekend with Michigan Tech visiting Mankato for a two-game series slated for Friday and Saturday at Verizon Wireless Center.
