Grand Island, Neb. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team played to a split Friday against two regionally ranked teams.
In the opener, MSU fell to Nebraska-Kearney, the #6-ranked team in the region, 5-1. Minnesota State, who is the #8-ranked team in the region, picked up its lone win at the #3 singles slot when senior Heather Jensen earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Heather Connolly.
In the nightcap, MSU rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to earn 5-4 victory over Metro State, the #3 ranked team in the region and the #43 ranked team in the country.
The Maverick’s lone win in doubles play came at the #1 flight where senior
Sarah Madigan and sophomore
Kathryn Gavin earned an 8-6 win.
Madigan fell to open singles play at the #1 flight, 6-3, 6-1, before the Mavericks roared back to win three straight matches to take a 4-3 win.
Gavin started the comeback with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the #2 flight and Jensen grinded out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win at the #3 flight. Sophomore
Brandi Dohmen continued the winning trend with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 victory at the #4 flight.
Metro State’s Nadia Khamis would tie the match with a 6-4, 6-0 win over junior #5 singles player,
Tegan Bakke, 6-4, 6-0, setting up a winner-take-all match at the #6 flight.
Sophomore
Jenny Gustafson secured the victory for the Mavericks as she earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alexis Alvarez.
Minnesota State (9-6) returns to action Saturday with a 3 p.m., contest against Mesa State.
