St. Peter, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team – ranked #8 in the latest ITA Central Region poll – dropped a 5-4 decision to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Upper Iowa, 5-4.
The Peacocks entered the match ranked #48 in the nation and #2 in the region.
The match started with MSU taking two points in doubles play. MSU’s top doubles team of senior
Sarah Madigan and sophomore
Kathryn Gavin – ranked #9 in the region - knocked off the top-ranked doubles team in the region, and #17 team nationally, of Amanda Nunez and Karli Loewecke, 8-6. Doubles action concluded with sophomore
Brandi Dohmen and freshman
Danni Collins won 9-7 (10-4) to stake MSU to a 2-1 lead after the first three matches.
Nunez – ranked #3 in the region in singles play - opened singles competition with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Madigan at the #1 flight to tie the score at three. Junior
Tegan Bakke regained the lead for MSU with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the #5 flight.
The back –and-forth affair continued as Anastasia Dabiza – who is ranked #9 in the region in singles play- earned a 7-6, 6-4 win at the #2 flight over Gavin.
Upper Iowa then took the lead at 4-3 when Karli Loewecke earned a 7-5, 5-7, 10-5 win over senior
Heather Jensen at the #4 flight.
Minnesota State would tie the match at four after sophomore
Jenny Gustafson won 6-3, 6-3 at the #6 flight.
The Peacocks snuck out the win as Dohmen fell to Courtney Romer in a super tiebreaker at the #4 flight, 1-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Minnesota State (7-5, 4-2 NSIC) continue league play Saturday as they entertain Southwest Minnesota State at 9 a.m., at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn.
