Box Score Wayne, Neb. – Minnesota State traveled to Wayne, Neb. to take on Wayne State in a battle of nationally ranked NSIC foes. The Mavericks fell behind 2-0, but battled back to force a fifth set. But came up short in the end, losing the match 3-2.
WSC jumped out to an 11-6 lead that forced MSU took take a time out. Following the break, MSU narrowed the deficit to 17-14. But that is as close as the Mavericks would get, as the Wildcats capture the first set 25-16.
Following a kill by junior middle blocker
Jill Storlie, MSU had a 10-6 lead in the second set. WSC would tie the set up at 12-12. After three more ties, WSC would pull away from a 16-16 tie and close the game on a 9-5 run, taking the set 25-21.
MSU opened the third set on a 14-8 lead that was punctuated by a Courtney Steinhauser, forcing WSC to take a time out. MSU then used a 5-0 run to put the set out of reach for good. The Mavericks won the third set 25-14.
In a back-and-forth fourth set, MSU used a 9-2 run to pull away from WSC following a 6-6 tie. MSU forced a decisive fifth set by winning the fourth set 25-16.
A highly competitive fifth set saw MSU jump out to a 10-4 lead. WSC fought back to tie the set up at 12-12. The Wildcats finished the set on a 3-0 run, taking the match 3-2.
The Mavericks were led offensively by junior outside hitter
Chelsea Fogarty, who finished with 18 kills. Senior setter
Brittany Stamer recorded a game-high 56 assists and 26 digs.
Senior defensive specialist
Alli Rice recorded 24 digs, moving her into 4
th all-time in school history with 1,179 digs.
With tonight’s outcome, the Mavericks now stand 10-6 overall and 3-5 in NSIC play. MSU will now travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on Augustana College tomorrow at 3 p.m.
