The NSIC regular season crown is on the line this weekend

Mavericks Hit the Road to Finish Regular Season

Mankato, Minn.-- The No. 14 Mavericks  (13-1-2, 10-0-1 NSIC) head north to finish its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference facing Bemidji State on Saturday at 1 p.m. MSU travels to Duluth on Sunday to face the Bulldogs at 1 p.m., to  finish the regular season. Minnesota State heads into the weekend on top of the NSIC and can clinch the regular season title with two victories.

MSU Last weekend: Minnesota State defeated Winona State 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a battle which determined the leader in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  Winona State has previously won the NSIC title in each of the last seven seasons. Minnesota State sophomore midfielder Tori Meinhardt’s seventh goal of the season was the games deciding factor. Meinhardt’s goal came on a pass down the middle of the field from junior midfielder Brianne West in the 39th minute of the first half. The Mavericks outshot the Warriors 26-8 in Saturday's game. Freshman goalkeeper Molly McGough tallied one save on the day and earned her seventh shutout of the season.
    Sunday MSU tied Upper Iowa 0-0 as MSU Goalkeeper Briana Hendricks had eight saves and Peacocks goalkeeper Amanda White had 15 saves on the day. MSU’s Nicole Dooher, Brittany Henry and Tori Meinhardt all had three shots on goal in the tie.

Scoutin the Beavers: Bemidji State (7-7-2, 5-4-2 NSIC) has scored 19 goals this season and have given up 22 goals. BSU have fired 111 shots on goal in 2011 and averages 12.6 shots per game. The Beavers have played in six overtime games this season, owning a 4-0-2 record in extra time. BSU is coached by Jim Stone.
    Senior Kirsten Erickson leads the Beaver offense with nine goals and four assists on the year. Erickson has 38 shots on goal and five game-winners. Senior Bri Scanlon has three goals and two assists this season. Senior goalkeeper Abby Kjonaas has started 13 games and owns a 1.39 goals against and a .827 save percentage.

MSU/BSU History: The teams have met six times as the Mavericks are 5-1 against the Beavers. The only loss MSU received from BSU was last season when Bemidji State came to Minnesota State and beat them 1-0 in the last game of the regular season. BSU’s Bri Scanlon scored the game-winner in 2010. The Mavericks have outscored the Beavers 38-2 in those six games.

Scoutin' the Bulldogs: Minnesota Duluth (8-5-1, 8-3-0 NSIC) has outscored opponents 28-19 this season, averaging two goals per game. The Bulldogs come into the weekend on a three-game winning-streak. UMD has competed in five overtime games, going 2-2-1 past the ninety minute mark. The Bulldogs average nine shots on goal per game and 17.7 shots per game. Minnesota Duluth is coached by Greg Cane.
    Freshman Maureen Stormont has eight goals and five assists this season, including 31 shots on goal. Sophomore Dani Potter owns five goals and three assists heading into the weekend. Junior goalkeeper Hanna Iaizzo has started every game in the nets, compiling a 1.31 goals against and a .804 save percentage.

MSU/UMD History: The Mavericks and Bulldogs have met 21 total times as Minnesota State owns a 12-7-2 record in those games. Last season, MSU beat UMD 3-2 in overtime on a Nicole Dooher goal in the 116th minute on a pass from Cassie Weik. Brittany Henry also registered a goal in the game a season ago. The two teams have split the last five games 2-2-1 and the Mavericks are 6-3-1 in the past ten games against the Bulldogs. 11 of the games between the schools have been decided by one goal.
 
The Redemption Factor: The Mavericks are 9-10-1 all-time coming off overtime games. MSU has tied in 13 games over its 17 seasons, generating a 9-5 record in games following a draw.
