Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. – The No. 13 Minnesota State Mavericks responded positively to their loss the previous night as they defeated the MSU Moorhead Dragons in four sets (25-15, 19-25, 28-26, 25-17) Saturday afternoon.
With the score tied at 11 early in the first set, MSU dialed up its offense and rattled off 14 of the sets final 18 points giving them the early 1-0 advantage.
MSU Moorhead would even the match in the second set as it was able to pull away from Mavericks mid-way through the set. The teams were tied at 13 until the Dragons finished the set on a 12-6 run, evening the match at one set a piece.
Minnesota State held a slight edge for most of the third set until the Dragons recaptured the lead late in the set at 24-23. However, the Mavericks fought back with a 5-2 run to end the set and take the one-set advantage heading into the fourth set.
The fourth set proved to be the final set as the Mavericks jumped out to an 18-9 lead. Moorhead would fight back with a 7-2 run to pull within five but it wasn’t enough as the Mavericks were able to hold on and finish off the dragons, 25-17.
The Mavericks were led offensively by sophomore outside hitter
Jenna McNallan who recorded a career-high 21 kills on 58 attempts. Two other Mavericks earned double-digit kills as junior outside hitter
Chelsea Fogarty and junior middle blocker
Jill Storlie recorded 15 and 14, respectively. MSU was once again paced by senior setter
Brittany Stamer who posted a game-high 52 assists.
The Mavericks (10-5, 3-4 NSIC) will next be in action Friday, Oct. 7 as their four-game road stretch takes them to Wayne, Neb., to take on the tenth-ranked Wayne State Wildcats. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
