St. Cloud, Minn. --- Minnesota State built a 4-0 lead and then held on to claim a 6-2 win over St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn., Saturday.
The Mavericks held a 1-0 edge after the first period of action at SCSU’s National Hockey Center with senior forward Rylan Galiardi twisting the twine at 2:58. The goal, his seventh of the year, came on a power play and after senior defenseman Kurt Davis faked a shot from the top of the slot before finding Galiardi all alone down by the side of the net.
MSU broke the game open in the second period with three unanswered tallies. Junior forward Michael Dorr scored on a wrist shot a 0:38, sophomore forward Chase Grant slid the puck under the pad s of SCSU’s Mike Lee at 1:30 and junior Joe Schiller scored a shorthanded marker at 10:58 to chase Lee.
Aaron Marvin and Cam Reid scored goals for the Huskies early in the third period to cut the MSU lead to two, but a tally by senior Andrew Sackrison at 13:17 and then an empty-netter by Michael Dorr at 18:22, sealed the win.
Dorr scored twice and Sackrison and Galiardi both had a goal and an assist in the win. Sophomore forward Eriah Hayes, junior forward Adam Mueller and Kurt Davis all contributed two assists. With 91 career points Davis has moved into tie with Todd George (MSU 1996-2000) for first on MSU’s career scoring for defensemen during the NCAA Division I era.
The shots were 37-31 in favor of MSU in the game.
