Mankato, Minn. – The No. 7 Minnesota State Mavericks were able to remain unbeaten in NSIC action on Thursday night as they defeated No. 10 Upper Iowa University 23-13 at Bresnan Arena.

The match wouldn’t begin as planned for the Mavericks as they fell behind 7-0 after the first two matches including a loss by the No. 2 ranked senior Andy Forstner who came up one-point short in a 3-2 decision win by the third-ranked Trevor Franklin.

However, the Mavericks would respond quickly as they drew to within one-point on a win by fall courtesy of sophomore Robby Fisher (141-lbs) at the 6:02 mark before taking a 9-7 lead on sophomore Jesse Westphal’s (149-lbs) 6-1 win by decision over Trevor Duke.

After losing the following match at 157-lbs, freshman Brendan Eichmann (165-lbs) won a 5-2 decision over Bryce Lumzy to recapture the 12-10 lead for the Mavericks who were about to go on a win-streak and remain perfect in NSIC action.

Senior Ben Becker, ranked eighth in the 174-lb weight class, gave the Mavericks a six-point lead thanks to his 10-0 major decision win over Wade Gobin.  Becker has now won seven of his last eight matches.

Junior Aaron Norgren (184-lbs) was next to take care of business as the No. 5 ranked grappler won a 8-0 major decision over Mark Mueller giving the Mavericks a 20-10 lead.

The Mavericks would ensure victory in the 197-lb match as junior Pat Mahan defeated the No. 6 ranked Carl Broghammer in a hard fought 4-1 win by decision.

The win marks the fifth-straight win for Minnesota State and propels the Mavericks to 8-2 overall including a 4-0 NSIC record while the loss drops the Peacocks to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in NSIC action.

Minnesota State has a quick turnaround as it travels to Sioux Falls, S.D. tomorrow to take on the No. 2 ranked Augustana Vikings. The Vikings currently hold a 9-1 overall record and are 3-0 in the NSIC.
