MSU Faces #20 Hillsdale Friday to Begin Tournament

#18 Minnesota State Opens 2010 Season with Ferris State Tournament

A New Beginning:  The Minnesota State volleyball team will open their 2010 campaign in the Ferris State volleyball tournament in Big Rapids, Mich. MSU will take part in four contests while away. Friday MSU will face Hillsdale and Lock Haven, while matching up against Ferris State and Michigan Tech Saturday.

A Look Back: The Minnesota State Maverick volleyball team look’s to improve on their successful 2009 campaign in which they competed in the NCAA Division II Volleyball tournament. The Mavericks finished the season with an overall record of 26-7 and a 16-4 record in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
 
The Record Book: Last year’s Maverick volleyball team made their mark in program history. MSU set new single-season team records and individual records. The Mavericks earned a new team-high for assists in a season with 1,625. The old record for assists in a season was 1,563 from 2002. The Mavericks also set a new single-season hitting percentage with .265. The record topped the previous record of .250 from the 2002 season. This season’s team also set a few individual records.

# 1,000: Last year outside hitter Amanda Beekman(Marshall, Minn.) finished second on the team in kills with 394. During her third season at Minnesota State, Beekman earned the 1,000th kill of her career. Beekman became the eighth member of the Maverick 1,000 Kill Club and currently sits at 1,072 career kills heading into her senior season.

The Setup: Setter Brittany Stamer (Hutchinson, Minn.) earned a team-high 1,442 assists during her sophomore season. The 1,442 assists sets a new team single-season record which was previously held by former Maverick setter Jen Blendermann who tallied 1,414 assists in 2002.

Makin ‘em Count: Middle blocker Kimber Kuhl (Chaska, Minn.) finished the 2009 season with a .354 hitting percentage, which is a new program record. The previous record holder was Kristen Schmid who finished the 1992 season with a .349 percentage. Kuhl finished fourth on the team in kills with 266 on 574 attempts. Kuhl’s best performance came on 10/30, at home against Bemidji State when she killed 13 of her 17 hits, giving her a .She also owns two other .700 plus performances last season.

Diggin’ It: Defensive specialist Alli Rice finished the 2009 season with 480 digs as a sophomore. Her 480 digs sets a new single-season record passing former Maverick Jen Jacobs old record of 469 digs. Rice earned a career-high 33 digs on 8/28 last season.
