Fort Lauderdale, Fla. --- The Minnesota State volleyball squad defeated Christian Brothers and West Alabama giving head coach Dennis Amundson his 100th career win at MSU. Amundson, owner of a 100-56 career mark at Minnesota State, becomes the fourth head coach in program history to reach the century mark and he currently owns the best winning percentage of those with 100 or more wins, .341.
The Mavericks swept Christian Brothers 3-0 (25-18, 25-18 and 25-16) in their first contest of the day. Senior outside hitter Amanda Beekman led MSU in its first game with 11 kills, while both senior middle blocker Amanda Thompson and sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Forgarty killed eight each. Junior setter Brittany Stamer continued to rack up assists, finishing with 38. Fogarty also led the Mavericks with 12 digs.
The Mavericks then defeated West Alabama, 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-12) in their second game. Minnesota State now owns a 6-0 mark on the year. Beekman racked up a team-best 16 kills to lead MSU. Thompson and Fogarty each tallied nine, and Stamer finished with 40 assists.
““I think we did OK today, played with a lot of grit and intensity,” said head coach Dennis Amundson. “The two teams we played today are similar to our conference opponents who we begin competition against next week, so it’s good preparation for us.”
Minnesota State (6-0 overall) will wrap up nonconference action tomorrow with contests against District of Columbia and Lynn University.
