Auburndale, Fla. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team has dropped its last three matches during its Florida trip. The Mavericks dropped a pair of matches yesterday against Palm Beach Atlantic (8-1) and Albion (5-4). This afternoon, MSU fell to Mesa State, 6-3.
In Tuesday’s opening match against Palm Beach Atlantic, the Mavericks picked up their lone victory at #2 singles as senior Paige Burke and junior Heather Jensen earned an 8-1 win.
Against Albion Tuesday evening, the Mavericks suffered a 5-4 loss. In doubles play, the duo of Burke and Jensen earned MSU’s only victory, 8-6 at the #2 flight. Minnesota State freshman Kathryn Gavin picked up a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win at the #2 flight and Jensen added a 6-1, 6-1 win at the #6 flight.
Burke closed the match for the Mavericks with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8-5) win at the #5 flight. After winning the opening set, Burke dropped the second and was down 5-0 in the third set before mounting a comeback to even the match at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Albion’s Sarah Towler took a 5-3 lead before Burke closed out the nearly two and a half hour match with four straight points to earn the win. The victory marked Burke’s third match victory in three set matches this week in Florida.
In today’s match against regional rival Mesa State, the Mavericks picked up a pair of wins in doubles play as Burke and Jensen earned an 8-4 win at the #2 flight. Senior Cassandra Anderson and sophomore Tegan Bakke earned an 8-6 win at the #3 position. In singles play, junior #1 player Sarah Madigan earned an 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, 6-4 win over Mesa State’s Sera Kellen.
Minnesota State (7-6) concludes action in Florida tomorrow as it plays Florida Institute of Technology at 2 p.m.
