Mavericks Defeat Northern State Twice in NSIC Double-Header

MANKATO, Minn. --- Senior righty Patrick Lenton and sophomore righty Blake Schwartz each earned three-hit victories Sunday afternoon as the Mavericks downed the Northern State Wolves 12-1 and 21-0.

In game one, Aaron Berner opened scoring in the first contest with a two-run homerun in the second to give the Mavericks the early 2-0 lead. Matt Kuchenbecker followed up Berner with a home run of his own, a solo-shot in the second.

The Mavericks added to their 3-1 lead in the fourth when Josh Simon and Patrick Dockendorf each tallied RBI.

MSU scored three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, runs batted in coming from Ben Kincaid on a single in the fifth, Kosuke Hattori earned a two-run double in the sixth.

Dockerndor hit his third home run of the year driving in two runs for the Mavericks, while Hattori and Steven Helget's triple drove in the final run.

Danny Miller and Hattori each had three hits on five at bats, while Kuchenbecker scored three runs for MSU.

Lenton struck out six batters in seven innings of work and now stands 5-1 for the season.

In the second game of the double-header, MSU scored in each of the seven innings of play.

Kincaid earned the opening RBI on a sacrifice fly, in which Zach Rowles came in to score. Miller followed that up with his second home run of the season, scoring two more Mavericks.

In the second and third, Kincaid hit a triple, Mike Eckhart singled and Rowles tripled all earning RBI.

The Mavericks finished the fifth inning with a 12-0 lead after runs batted in by Kuchenbecker, reaching on a fielders choice, and a Kincaid home run.

The Mavericks finished off the Wolves in the sixth by scoring seven runs. Matt Odegaard belted a two-run single, Berner hit a three-run home run and Kyle Svoboda tacked on a one-run single.

Schwartz struck out four in six innings of work and now stands 4-0 for 2010.

The Mavericks (13-5, 2-0 NSIC) and Wolves (3-14, 0-2 NSIC) will square-off again tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. start time.
