Aberdeen, S.D. – Seventh-ranked Minnesota State won seven of ten matches, including two by fall, to rout conference foe Northern State 32-9 in Aberdeen, S.D., Friday night. The win gives the Mavericks an 8-4 record on the season, including a 3-2 mark in Northern Sun action.
Senior heavyweight Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) started the dual for the Mavericks, earning an 11-2 major decision victory to improve to 24-4 on the season. A forfeit win for junior Brian Reisenauer (Fargo, N.D.) at 125 pounds put the Mavericks up 10-0 heading into 133 pounds. Junior All-American Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.) bumped up from his traditional 125-pound slot and earned a major decision win by a score of 16-7 to push the Maverick advantage to 14 points.
Minnesota State pulled away with a pair of falls in the middle of the order. Freshman Robby Fisher (Bloomington, Minn.) built up a solid lead in his 141-pound match before using a third-period headlock to secure his 20th win of the season and fifth by fall. Senior All-American Travis Elg (Mountain Lake, Minn.) earned a fall of his own in just 1:07, his fourth of the season at 149 pounds.
The Wolves earned decisions at 157 and 165 pounds to get on the board, but the Mavericks iced the win with decisions at 174 and 184. Junior Ben Becker (Fort Dodge, Iowa) gave up a first-period takedown but rebounded for an 11-4 win, followed by a 9-2 win by sophomore Aaron Norgren (Good Thunder, Minn.). Northern State picked up a win at 197 pounds, bringing the dual to a close.
The Mavericks return home next weekend, hosting St. Cloud State. Match time on Friday is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Bresnan Arena.
