Minnesota State Icers Travel to Wisconsin to Take on the Badgers

MANKATO, Minn.--- The Mavericks, now 5-18-5 on the year and 3-16-5-3 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, will travel to Madison, Wis. to take on the university of Wisconsin Badgers at the Kohl Center. Friday’s contest will get started at 2:07 p.m. and Sunday’s game at 11:07 a.m.

Program History: The 2009-10 season marks the 12th year of women’s hockey as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. The Mavericks currently hold a 118-248-37 (.338) all-time record in 403 games the program has competed in.

Getting to know the Badgers: The University of Wisconsin Badgers sit third in the WCHA with a 16-11-3 overall record and 13-10-1-0 in the WCHA. The Badgers are lead by sophomore forward Brooke Ammerman (17-13--30). Ammerman’s 30 points ranks 12th in the conference, while her 17 goals ranks third. Rookie forward Brianna Decker sits second on the team in scoring with (14-10--24), third in points is sophomore forward Carolyne Prévost with (9-14--23) and junior forward Mallory Deluce (11-11--22) sits fourth on the team in points. As a team, the Badgers sit either third, fourth or fifth in all of the conference categories.

MSU/UW History: Minnesota State is 0-42-2 all-time against the Badgers. Earlier this season the Mavericks played host to the University of Wisconsin and were swept. The Mavericks lost the series opener by a score of 3-0. The two teams wrapped up the series and the Badgers defeated the Mavericks, 6-2. In the loss, senior forward Christina Lee scored the Mavericks first goal of the game. Junior defender Amy Udvig earned an assist on the goal. The Mavericks other score was tallied on a power play chance in which senior Captain Kala Buganski tallied the teams second goal. Senior blueliner Holly Snyder and rookie forward Lauren Smith earned the assists on the Mavericks second score. The squads two ties agasint the Badgers came in the 03-04 season and in last year’s home meeting against the Badgers.

St. Cloud Notes: The Minnesota State Mavericks split their home-and-home series with the St. Cloud State Huskies this past weekend, with a 6-1 loss at St. Cloud on Friday and a 4-0 win in Mankato on Sunday...The win marks the fifth of the season...third conference win of the year...Win number 118 in program history...64th WCHA win in program history...Win number 67 at home in school history...The shutout was the first since last season when the Mavericks played the Huskies in game three of their playoff series in which the Mavericks won, 1-0...Senior forward Christina Lee finished the weekend with three points, all assists and all of them coming in the Mavericks win on Sunday...Three Mavericks finished the weekend with two points including senior Captain Kala Buganski(1-1--2), sophomore forward Emmi Leinonen (1-1--2) and sophomore Moira O’Connor (1-1--2)...Senior forward Ashley Young (1G), sophomore blueliner Ariel Mackley (1G) and rookie forward Lauren Smith (1A) all finished the series with one point...Senior forward Ashley Young continues to lead the Mavericks in scoring with 8-10--18 and rookie freshman Lauren Smith (6-10--16) and Leinonen (9-7--16) sit tied for second on the team with 16 points each...After her three assist, eight shot weekend, Lee passed former Maverick Maggie Fisher as the leader in career shots, owning 465... She also owns 50 assists over career with the Mavericks, only two away from Fisher’s school record of 52...She also sits two short of tying Melanie Salatino’s career power play goals record of 17.

Recap at St. Cloud 2-5-10: In Friday’s loss, the Huskies didn’t wait long to score the opening goal...Just 25 seconds into the game the senior forward Felicia Nelson tallied the game’s first goal...The goal was assisted by rookie forward Alex Nelson and freshman defender Lisa Martinson...Minnesota State knotted up the contest at the 8:55 in the first period on a goal from senior forward Ashley Young...Young scored on Huskie goaltender Ashley Nixon’s glove-side and was setup nicely in from of the net by rookie forward Lauren Smith. Senior forward and Captain Kala Buganski also earned an assist on the goal...St. Cloud jumped back in the lead with an even strength goal midway through the first period...Senior forward Holly Roberts tallied the go-ahead goal at the 12:50 mark and was assisted by fellow senior Felicia Nelson...The Huskies increased their lead to 5-1 after a couple early second period power play goals and an even strength score late in the period...The first coming at the 1:04 mark scored by senior forward Caitlin Hogan and the other 5:34 into the period from Holly Roberts...Senior defenseman Kelly Meirhofer tallied the late score for the Huskies...The Huskies outshot the Mavericks 32-28 in the game...MSU finished the game 0-2 with an extra skater while the Huskies finished 2-5...Sophomore Alli Altmann tallied 18 saves in the contest, while junior Paige Thunder finished with 10 saves.

Recap vs. St. Cloud  2-7-10: The Mavericks took the early 1-0 lead on Sunday when senior Captain Kala Buganski stole the puck and tallied her third goal of the season with a nice move in front of the net, scoring on St. Cloud goaltender Ashley Nixon’s stick side...Midway through the second period the Mavericks increased their lead to 2-0 on a power play goal...Sophomore defender Ariel Mackley scored her first goal of the season, second of her career off of a scrappy rebound on the stick side of Nixon...Senior forward Christina Lee and sophomore Emmi Leinonen earned helpers on the score...The Mavericks continued to put the pressure on the Huskies and it paid off late in the second...Sophomore forward Moira O’Connor tallied her fourth goal of the season off of her own rebound, glove side of Nixon...Lee earned her second assist of the contest with a nice pass which setup O’Connor on the goal...Minnesota State continued to control the contest when Leinonen positioned herself in front of the net and Lee earned her third assist of the afternoon on a nice centering pass to Leinonen...O’Connor also earned an assist on the Mavericks fourth goal...Sophomore goaltender Alli Altmann finished the contest with 33 saves and earned her first shutout of the season...The Huskies out shot MSU, 33-30, but the Mavericks finished the contest 2-4 on power play chances compared to the Huskies, 0-5.
